Founders Cup (Half Empty)

For those of you just joining the program, new commissioner Mike Whan has created a new event to help fill an already sparse LPGA schedule. The Founders Cup is meant to honor the founding members of the LPGA tour. The problem is that the players are playing for monopoly money. The purse is set for 1.3 million for purposes of the money list rankings and points, but no money will actually be dispersed. Instead, tournament sponsor RR Donnelley will cover all operating costs and donate the revenue to the LPGA-USGA Girls’ Golf Foundation.

Despite all good intentions, the Founders Cup event has become somewhat divisive amongst top players. The issue being the money or lack thereof and what charity the donation will go towards. Some players feel this is a long term investment with a sponsor. Others prefer to choose their own charities to give to rather than have one dictated to them. Suzann Pettersen, Paula Creamer, Cristie Kerr, and Morgan Pressel are either on the fence or not playing. Natalie Gulbis, Christina Kim, Brittany Lincicome, Angela Stanford and Kristy McPherson are in. Either way, the LPGA has more cleavage than it needs at the moment.
