Tres Marias Championship has been postponed and might possibly be renamed the “How much for the women championship?”
Mike Whan spoke with waggleroom.com to report that due to warring drug cartels in Mexico has forced the LPGA to postpone the event due to the violence in the region.
“This week we decided officially to postpone it,” said Whan. He pointed to recent violence at a soccer match in which gunmen killed seven people as an example of the ongoing dangers players might face in Mexico.
“As a father, I couldn’t say to other fathers, ‘your daughter should go to Morelia,’” Whan added. “I feel the pressure of playing but another pressure I never want to succumb to is making a dumb decision to put lives in jeopardy.”
This announcement and the rift stirred by the Founders Cup event have seriously slowed the positive momentum Whan has seen since being named commissioner of the tour.
