It's not you, it's me

Well done Alvaro Quiros for winning this year’s Omega Dubai Desert Classic, but it was supposed to be a showdown between those on top of the world rankings. Instead, the wind kicked up on the weekend and blew the drama right out of Dubai. From the start though, Rory McIlroy seemed to have something to say about his 7th place in the world rankings. He led or was tied for the lead for the first three rounds. Sergio Garcia, who is searching for his place in the world rather than on scoreboards, also made his presence known. It seemed the golf world was a buzz for all things Dubai and who could blame them. The only alternative this weekend was the celebrity/CEO interview marathon at Pebble Beach. Unfortunately, like any big billing, it was hard to live up to.

Kaymer shot 76 in the third round and was done. Still, there was Tiger and Sergio who were one shot back and Westwood was three. Plenty to talk about until the curtain was raised for the final act. Tiger and Sergio shot 75 after both found water on eighteen. Westwood was one shot back with four to play, but doubled the 17th. Given the way the tournament started, the most disappointing story line has to be McIlroy. After a fast start in the first two rounds, he seemed prepared to live up to his potential. Again, Garcia was a feel good story. Kaymer is still number three in the world and has a major and Tiger is Tiger; the most important golfer in the world. Westwood, despite not winning a major, is still number one in the world.

McIlroy, on the other hand, has had the world by the Titleist since joining the golf world; but has just two wins to show for it. No doubt McIlroy is a class act, with never ending potential; but his final round 74 was most disappointing to watch. Once again, his putter is the dagger that dealt the death blow. For the week, McIlroy was ranked 6th in hitting greens in regulation, but ranked 54th for putts per round with an average of 30. This is disheartening considering a win amongst the big three billing would have been tremendous, but he laid the biggest egg of the tournament storylines.
