Golf Channel’s Rex Hoggard reported here that Mickelson wanted to have a Spanish themed meal in honor of Seve Ballesteros for the annual Champions Dinner the week of the Masters. It’s seems that meal won’t happen since Seve will not be able to attend the dinner due his medical condition. He’s not been able to travel since recovering from surgery to remove a brain tumor. The gesture by Mickelson is classic Phil. It’s been well documented that Phil, perhaps would not be voted “coolest” guy on tour; but people should be reminded that this is not the first time Mickelson has reached out and shown a little public empathy for someone.
Since Rick Reilly’s SI article, golf fans have been polarized as either a Phil guy or a Tiger guy. Regardless of where you fall on that scale, remember one thing—Tiger is still the guy when it comes to golf.
Whether or not he’s the type of guy that would have a Spanish themed dinner for an ailing legend, we would like to think so. For certain though, we know Phil is that guy as evident in the gesture towards Seve. We might also remember what he did for Hunter Mahan at the team press conference at the conclusion of the 2010 Ryder Cup. The press was grilling Mahan and he broke down under the pressure of having to explain his loss in the final and deciding match of the Ryder Cup. When Mahan could not keep his composure for a second time, it was Mickelson who grabbed the microphone. If you missed the moment you can watch it here and be reminded that maybe he’s not the coolest on tour, you can count on him to do the right thing.
