2011 World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play

Marana, Arizona received an inch of snow overnight, but nevertheless, golf was played and Luke Donald dispatched Martin Kaymer 3 and 2 in just his second start of 2011. The world’s new number one, the “Germanator,” was no match for Donald’s precision short game. Donald never trailed in a match all week and today was no different. He was three up through the first five holes, but Kaymer battled back to square the match through nine holes of play. Donald responded with birdies on the 11th, 12th, and sealed the deal on the 16th. This is Donald’s third career win and has now moved to number three in the Official World Golf Rankings.
Nuggets:
- · Tiger and Phil both went out in style: Tiger in extra holes couldn’t hit a “two hundred yard wide fairway” to save his match play life and Phil, in a 6 & 5 drubbing by pretty in pink Rickie Fowler. When Tiger was asked where he was in the process of rebuilding his swing, he replied, “pissed, that’s where I am.” So while Tiger continues to insist that he just needs more reps, he fails to add more tournaments to get ready for the Masters.
- · Also pissed, were Lee Westwood and agent Chubby Chandler. Both made it quite known via twitter that they were disappointed with amount of television coverage Westwood was getting in his first round match. The Golf Channel clearly ignored him, favoring no surprise, Tiger Woods.
- · Europeans now occupy four of the top five spots in the Official World Golf Rankings: 1. Martin Kaymer 2. Lee Westwood 3. Luke Donald 4. Graeme McDowell 5. Tiger Woods
